Free Alzheimer’s Presentation at Vilar on October, 2

Dr. Maria Carrillo, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Chief Science Officer, will present the latest research advances in the relentless work to eradicate Alzheimer’s on Monday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.

In a free-of-charge dynamic presentation, “The Alzheimer’s Epidemic: Research, Progress and Hope,” Dr. Carillo will discuss global efforts and provide a local focus as senior populations in Eagle, Garfield and Pitkin counties are expected to quadruple by 2035.

Dr. Carrillo, a consultant on the Alzheimer’s movie Still Alice, has been invited to present by Gary Wicklund, of Vail Valley Rotary Clubs, along with Eagle Valley Senior Life: Partners in Elder Caregiving, and a group of other generous supporters, including Eagle County Public Health, Oligomerix, Inc., Alpine Area Agency on Aging, Vail Public Library, Castle Peak and TV 8.

More than five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s and the number could rise as high as 16 million by 2050. Alzheimer’s Disease is currently the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.

However, Dr. Carrillo’s message includes providing hope by sharing the significant progress in the disease’s research. Internationally recognized for her work, she is on the Advisory Committee for the World Health Organization Dementia Setting Priorities & Portfolio Analysis, is on the Governing Board of the Global Brain health Institute and manages the World-Wide Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, which is a research effort aimed at finding biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer’s.
