Topic: The Impact of Planned Giving on Your Nonprofit’s Success

Planned gift programs provide the biggest “bang” for the investment dollar among all types of fundraising programs. Local nonprofits who get their bequest and beneficiary designation programs operating soonest will find it easier to fund their charitable needs year after year. The philanthropic vision and mission of your nonprofit will also be more likely to be achieved well into the future. Providing your donors with the opportunity to leave a legacy is a responsible and powerful way to help them know they are making a huge difference.

The Nonprofit Learning Series is honored to have Gordon Smith, a veteran planned giving specialist for National Jewish Health, the leading Respiratory Hospital in the country, located in Denver. He will share how he initiates the conversation with donors who are the most likely candidates for a planned gift. Knowing that long-term loyalty to the cause is the best predictor of a person’s willingness to make a bequest, he shares how new combinations of existing approaches can personalize the gift to better meet the needs of the benefactor. He will be the first to say that planned giving is not just for “old” people, wealthy patrons, or for the tax benefits. It begins with communicating your message to the right supporter base.

According to Giving USA 2017, “Smaller” donors are making bigger bequest gifts. The 20.4 percent increase in bequest giving from estates with assets less than $1 million indicates that smaller charities can focus more effort on planned giving. Research also indicates that individuals were more likely to respond positively when phrasing indicated social norms, such as “many people like to leave a gift to charity in their wills,” or “to support causes that have been important in their/your life/lives.”

Be sure you don’t miss this session on Friday, July 20 from 1-2:30 at the U.S. Bank 3rdfloor conference room.
