Trifonov plays Chopin: Daniil Trifonov, Gramophone ’s 2016 Artist of the Year, has made a spectacular ascent since winning First Prize at both the Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein competitions at just 20 years old, the same age as Chopin at the premiere of his youthful first Piano Concerto. This endlessly inventive work, with its rich ornamentation and elegant grandeur, is a fitting opening for Schumann’s masterfully transcendent Symphony No. 2.
