Since January 2012, Eagle River Fire Protection District has lost approximately $1.7M or nearly 25% of its property tax revenue. Predictions indicate that the District will lose up to another $1M in property tax revenue beginning January, 2014, for a combined loss of up to $2.7M or almost 45% of its property tax revenue.
The reduction in property tax revenue has forced the District to limit its operating expenses. Having already laid-off 4 senior management personnel and eliminated 8 Resident Firefighter positions from its 2012 budget, the District has had to also stop paying overtime to fill critical positions left open by leave, resulting in intermittent Fire Station closures.
Following is a recap of ERFPD intermittent Fire Station closures for the month of July, 2012:
Minturn: 1 Day
Avon: 3 Days
Edwards: 4 Days
Cordillera: 9 Days
Every member of Eagle River Fire, from Firefighter to Board Member, abhors having to close any Fire Station for even a single day. Unfortunately, current budget constraints have forced the District to take these measures. Given predictions of further property tax revenue reductions slated for January, 2014, the District has also begun preparing for reductions in service in addition to the current intermittent station closures.
