Samara Joy and Pasquale Grasso Quartet:

Making her Vail Jazz debut at the age of 21, Samara’s star is rising as a highly acclaimed young jazz vocalist.  She has already performed in many of the great jazz venues such as Dizzy’s, The Blue Note, Birdland and Mezzrow, in addition to working with Christian McBride, Kirk Lightsey, Cyrus Chestnut and Dr. Barry Harris.  Though inspired by many Gospel and R&B artists including Stevie Wonder, Lalah Hathaway, George Duke and others, her vocal stylings are most clearly influenced by Sarah Vaughan.  In fact, Samara recently won the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and, in addition, was named an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. With a sound described as “both classic and contemporary,” she has opened for Gregory Porter and has recently been touring with piano notable Emmet Cohen.
