The Eagle Valley Transportation Authority’s Board of Directors held its initial strategic planning retreat last month. Members and alternates of the board, as well as staff and consultants, rolled up their sleeves for a day and tackled several key tasks in the formation of the new transportation authority.
One of the most important tasks was creating an Interim Strategic Plan to set a roadmap and timeline for establishing the organization and providing services to the community. The plan responds directly to the priorities set forth in the 2022 ballot question and the transportation needs of the region and the communities that make up the EVTA. The priorities identified by the board for the following 12 to 24 months include:
- Building EVTA’s organizational structure and culture
- Taking action on transportation improvements
- Planning for the region’s transportation future
- Transitioning ECO Transit’s operations

Another exercise was establishing Operating Principles for the board. As a regional transportation authority, board members not only represent their jurisdictions—in this case Eagle County, five towns and a metro district—they also represent and act on behalf of the entire region’s transportation needs and services. The board felt that creating a set of Operating Principles would assist with addressing immediate questions related to the authority’s formation as well as establish a culture of regional collaboration moving forward. In addition to the strategic plan and operating principles, the board began crafting the authority’s official mission, vision and identity. This conversation highlighted the board’s interest in creating a high-quality transit system with broad appeal and will form the foundation for upcoming work around creating the authority’s brand and rolling out EVTA service to the Eagle Valley community. To assist with this task, the EVTA board at its April meeting selected Longmont’s Studio Six, one of the country’s top firms for transit agency branding and communications. We look forward to involving the community in the process of finalizing EVTA’s vision, mission and brand as we prepare for future service enhancements.
