There’s no doubt discovering music changed Ronnie Milsap’s life. Born blind and brilliant, he quickly became one of country music’s most popular and influential performers. In school, Milsap learned to play music ranging from classical to rock and roll. Once he was old enough to play in clubs, he started sharing bills with musicians like Ray Charles and James Brown.

After moving to Memphis, Milsap received praise from Elvis during a session where he famously commanded, “More thunder on the keys, Milsap,” while he recorded “Kentucky Rain.” From there, Milsap continuously broke genre rules and became one of the biggest pop/AC and R&B artists of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Claiming awards throughout his career such as CMA Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year, Milsap has also received six Grammy’s, 40 No. 1 hits, five decades of charted singles and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014.

An inspiration for new country music artists like Kasey Musgraves and Little Big Town, Milsap is a testament to going where you don’t belong with an open heart and a true sense of music as a compass. Performing in venues all over the world, from soul clubs to the White House, Milsap leads with an open mind, a story to tell and a hunger to play. Catch him at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on March 5.
