Coffee table book explores vision of architectural design and land stewardship
Eagle County, Colo. (April 23, 2019) – Vail Valley’s Bud Knapp and members of the Knapp Ranch book team found themselves in incredible company earlier this month as they were honored with the 2019 Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Photography/Art Book for the Knapp Ranch book titled,“Living Beneath the Colorado Peaks — The Story of Knapp Ranch”.
The group joined well-known names including Kevin Costner, Michael Martin Murphey and the family of the late Clark McEntire as honorees at the 59thAnnual Western Heritage Awards held at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Presented by celebrity hosts, the Museum’s Western Heritage Awards was established in 1961 to commemorate the American West by honoring individuals for their creative works in literature, music, television and film.
Members of the Knapp Ranch book team include Bud Knapp and his late wife Betsy Knapp, former publishers of Architectural Digest and Bon Appetit magazines; author Sarah Chase Shaw; designer Lisa McGuire; and photographerTodd Winslow Pierce, the principal recipient of the award. Other book team members attending were Douglas Pfeiffer, Publishing Consultant; Linda Hill, Marketing & PR; Wendy Rimel, Chief Marketing Officer; and Claire Thayer, Director of Special Projects & Hospitality.
In the 1990s, Betsy and Bud Knapp left the publishing world to pursue a dream. Their story of discovery, observation, fulfillment, and their many lessons learned while building a home and settling in the Rocky Mountain West is told in the beautiful coffee table book, Living Beneath the Colorado Peaks: The Story of Knapp Ranch, A Vision of Architectural Design and Land Stewardship.
Living Beneath the Colorado Peaks tells the fascinating story of the Knapps’ dedication to the design, history, conservation, and appreciation of the Rocky Mountain landscape. Photographer Todd Winslow Pierce’s rich imagery and writer Sarah Chase-Shaw’s descriptive prose add dimension to the cultural and natural history of the region and its influence on the architecture, interior design, and landscape. Sprinkled throughout the book are indelible stories of the relationships forged between the Knapps and a cadre of craftspeople, designers, and builders, all of whom were dedicated to the integrity and the challenges of pursuing the historical building methods and artistry embedded in every detail. Ultimately, it’s the story of discovery, observation, fulfillment and self-sufficiency, and the many lessons learned throughout the process of building Knapp Ranch as it is today.
