A Fundraising Sprint Triathlon to Honor Rebecca Yarberry

Avon, Colo. – The 2017 BecTri, a sprint-distance triathlon, will be held on August 5th, 2017 in Harry A. Nottingham Park in Avon. The BecTri starts at 8:00 a.m. with a 400m swim in Nottingham Lake, followed by an out and back 15K bike through Edwards’ Singletree neighborhood and finishing with a 5K run along the Eagle River recreational path. The triathlon is held in memory of Rebecca Lynn Yarberry, a local triathlete and friend who passed away in a tragic car accident in 2007. Becky had a generous heart and a loving spirit. In it’s 10th year, the race honors her spirit by fostering a race environment that is encouraging to everyone, regardless of skill level.

Racers must be at Nottingham Park by 7:00 a.m. Spectator, volunteer and athlete parking is located in Beaver Creek’s Bear Lot. A Silent Auction will be held in the park before and during the race.  Bid on exciting items like:  three days of lodging and skiing for two at Telluride Ski Resort Lodging, Vail International Dance Festival tickets, an Epic ski pass, one month at Revolution Power Yoga, pies from Sticky Fingers in Minturn and much more!

The open-water, high-altitude swim in Nottingham Lake is always a big hit. The bike course heads west from Avon through Edwards’ Singletree neighborhood, returning to Avon via Hwy 6. Note: The bike course is reversed this year. Bikers climb through Singletree via Winslow Road and come down Berry Creek Road, past the Edwards schools to Hwy 6 back to Nottingham Park. The event finishes with a 5K run that follows the recreational path along the south side of the lake connecting with the scenic Eagle River Path at W. Beaver Creek Blvd. This is an out and back run course with an aid station at Bob the Bridge.

In addition to the sprint triathlon, three events will return again this year… a 5K Walk/Run, Kids Duathlon and Kids Triathlon. “Our goal is for the BecTri to be an event that everyone can participate in. It is great to see all abilities and age levels can come out and join the fun,” says Michelle Maloney, Vail Valley Charitable Fund’s Executive Director. The 5K begins at 8:30 am and follows the same course as the triathlon 5K. The kids duathlon and triathlon will travel around Nottingham Lake. Kids ages 6-13 can participate in the kids duathlon. They will bike 2 laps around the lake, and run 1 lap, finishing with a slip n’ slide. The kids triathlon is open to those brave enough to try the swim, ages 10-13. They will start with a 50yd swim in the lake, followed by 2 laps biking and 1 lap running.

The kid’s event will begin at approximately 10:30 am with the kids triathlon racers beginning before the kids duathlon racers. We will have a short safety meeting for the kids before race start! One lap around the lake is approximately 0.8 mile in distance.
