Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is gearing up for another busy summer by adding six new gondola cabin cars to the Iron Mountain Tramway. The addition will bring the total number of cabin cars to 18, an increase of 50 percent that’s designed to reduce wait times for guests. The park will be closed from Monday, April 29, through Wednesday, May 1, for the installation.
The new cabin cars were shipped from Switzerland via ocean freighter and will be installed by a team of employees from the Adventure Park and from Leitner-Poma of America, which is based inGrand Junction. A small, long-arm crane will be used to support the cabin cars while they are being attached to the cable line.
“When the work is completed, an Acceptance Test will be performed by a professional engineer from the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board,” explained Wade Beattie, base operations manager for Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. “In the meantime, we’ve been reupholstering the seats in the existing cabin cars and will be polishing the cabins and windows, and replacing some windows, so that all of the cabin cars are getting facelifts.”
The Iron Mountain Tramway, a state-of-the-art European pulse gondola that opened in April 2003, travels 4,300 feet up the side of Iron Mountain, providing panoramic views of Glenwood Springs. The gondola cabin cars are fully enclosed and are wheelchair-accessible.
