  • Vail Joins Other Communities in Cancelling Fireworks

After careful consideration, the Town of Vail is joining other communities across the state in cancelling its professional fireworks display on the Fourth of July. The decision was announced today by Mayor Andy Daly on behalf of the Vail Town Council after consulting with the town’s public safety representatives.

While Vail’s display would have made use of a flame-resistant product designed specifically for the extremely dry conditions, the decision to cancel the show reinforces Vail’s larger responsibility in joining fire officials from across the state in doing everything it possibly can to create a heightened awareness of the extreme fire danger and to set the example for Vail’s residents and guests, according to Mayor Daly. As such, the town is prepared to aggressively enforce the ban on personal fireworks and open burning to ensure the town uses its available resources to provide a safe and fun atmosphere for its guests.

Daly says the decision to cancel the fireworks also allows for a unified message on behalf of the community. “We were concerned that the town’s fireworks display, while considered to be extremely safe, would conflict with the statewide emphasis in raising public awareness about the ban on the use of personal fireworks,” he said. “It’s our number-one priority.”

Today’s decision follows previous July Fourth fireworks cancellations by the town in 2006, 2002 and 1998, also due to extreme conditions. Residents and guests are asked to familiarize themselves with provisions of the Stage 2 fire restrictions which have been enacted in Vail and Eagle County. The restrictions prohibit campfires, use of charcoal grills and fireworks, among other activities. Outdoor smoking is also prohibited in most areas, including Vail Mountain. Despite the cancellation of the fireworks, Vail America Days on July 4th promises to provide a fun-filled celebration that includes the region’s largest parade, a patriotic concert, family activities and live music. For details, visit www.Vail4th.com.
