Water Supply and Drought Conditions

Eagle River Water and Sanitation District regulates outdoor water use to protect an adequate supply of water for customers. Water available for irrigation and other outdoor uses may be less than normal this year due to this winter’s record low snowpack. Currently, normal year-round Water Use Regulations are in effect. The district encourages all customers to take action to lessen the impact of drought on our community by carefully considering their outdoor water needs and following the watering schedule.

Water Efficiency Tips:

Water outside when the weather is cool and calm because water is lost to evaporation during hot and windy conditions. Try watering for two minutes less or skip the shady part of your yard for a day. Check you irrigation system for broken or blocked sprinkler heads or lines and ensure they’re not spraying onto driveways or roads.

Outdoor Water Use:

Summertime creates high demand in the public water system due to the large amount of water used for outdoor areas. Most irrigation systems turn-on automatically so water use continues throughout the night. The regulations help to even out the demand on the water supply since they allow about half of district customers to water on a given day, between Tuesday and Sunday. Violation of the Water Use Regulations can result in citations and fines.

Water Use Regulations:

The complete regulations are available online and include the odd/even watering schedule as follows:

• Monday: No Outdoor Water Use

• Tues/Thurs/Sat: Odd numbered addresses may water

• Wed/Fri/Sun: Even numbered addresses may water

• Water between midnight and 10 a.m. OR between 4 p.m. and midnight on your watering day

• The irrigation day runs from midnight to midnight

• Properties with both odd and even numbered street addresses should contact the Water Conservation Officer to determine the best watering schedule

• Hoses must have water saving shut off nozzles to prevent free running water

• Permits are required for consecutive day irrigation

• Swimming pools are limited to one filling per year, unless draining for repairs is necessary

All district customers recently received the 2012 regulations in the mail with their monthly water bills. The regulations were also sent to local landscaping companies, property managers, and homeowners associations since many residents do not have individual water service accounts.
