The 4th Annual Eagle Get Out Expo proudly announced its event schedule for May 12 and 13, 2012 in Eagle, Colorado. This two-day outdoor activities and sports event and expo will include a community bike ride to benefit the Shaw Regional Cancer Center and The 2nd Annual ChroMoly Chef competition. The inaugural Longboard Push Race and BMX track event will be part of the festivities this year, as well as the Taste of Eagle highlighting local cuisine, outdoor expo, beer garden, bands and more. “Eagle is the Vail Valley’s summer playground,” said Gabrie Higbie of presenting sponsor KZYR. “The Get Out Expo celebrates this and everything this community offers to outdoor recreation. Our community is excited to gather together to host this event that draws people from three counties and the Front Range.”
The community mountain and road bike ride will take place in Eagle, Co on Saturday, May 12 at 11:00 a.m. Registration can be done online, for self-guided beginner, intermediate and advanced courses for both mountain and road biking, prior to the event through the Vail Recreation District website. Pre-registered riders may pick up their race packets on Friday, May 11 at Mountain Pedaler Bike Shop in Eagle, or at the race on Saturday. Registrations will also be taken from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 12 at the ride start.
Per the Federal Bureau of Land Management, all riders MUST “Check-In” and “Check-Out” with registration volunteers. The designated start time of this self-guided mountain and road Community Bike Ride is 11:00 a.m. Riders may start riding the course throughout the day as their schedules permit until 2:00 p.m. Members of The Youth Foundation’s Ells Angels will lead groups on the mountain bike trails at the top of each hour for those not wanting to navigate them alone.
The cost to participate in the Community Bike Ride is $25 per entrant and includes a water bottle, the bike ride, a HoneyMilk protein drink and one free beer ticket for the After Ride Party at 3:00 p.m. $20 of each registration will be donated directly to the Shaw Regional Cancer Center. Helmets are required by all riders.
If you’ve heard of the Iron chef competitions, the Eagle Get Out Expo ChroMoly Chef competition, sponsored by Street Swell, will be one for the books. First held in the Vail Valley at the 2011 Get Out Expo, and then invited to participate at the 2011 US Pro Cycling Challenge start in Avon, CO, the ChroMoly Chef event challenges hard-core bike makers, experts and riders to build a working bicycle from scratch. Four teams of two will have one hour to build a bike from a selection of bike parts which will be provided but not revealed until 2 minutes before the clock starts. Once the clock starts builders can run to the part “pantry” and select the parts for the build. At the end of the time limit, a team representative will need to ride the bike 50 yards around a pylon and return to the start finish line. At that point the teams will be judged by a panel of three impartial judges on creativity, function, and placing in the 50-yard dash.
The ChroMoly Chef competition is by invitation only. Potential participants can call (970) 376-4825 for more information. Says John Cummins of Street Swell, organizer of this competition, “I love the Food Channel, one night after watching an Iron Chef marathon I dreamed of a cooking competition only with bike parts instead of food. The next day the ChroMoly Chef event was born. One of the best dreams I have ever had.”
Outdoor Expo:
This year’s expo will be held in downtown Eagle Ranch. With nearly 40 vendors, it will also prove to truly have something for everyone. Vendors will include Level Terrain/FlipBelt, Skeleton Performance Optics, Mountain Bike Eagle, Eagle County BMX, Avon Venture Sports, Mountain Pedaler, BMC Cycling, several bike manufacturers, MOTOACTV, HP Provisions, Lakota Guides, the Bowlmore Café, and more.
Longboard Push Race:
Street Swell will also sponsor a 10K long board kick race and 1K fun skate race, where participants will race on longboards around the Town of Eagle. Entrants may register, call 877.216.9091. The cost is $10.00 per person for the 10K race, the 1K fun skate is free of charge. Longboarding is a sport similar to skateboarding. It uses a longer board, bigger wheels and sometimes bigger trucks to let the rider “surf” on concrete. Helmets are required, and participants will be required to follow all traffic laws and be kind to pedestrians.
Taste of Eagle:
Restaurants throughout the Town of Eagle will be participating in the Taste of Eagle Sunday May 13th. Restaurants to be highlighted include the well-known, Colorado original Dusty Boot, homemade Italian family restaurant Luigi’s Pastahouse, Old Kentucky Tavern, the Bowl Mor Café, and HP’s Provisions.
Beer Garden:
Mountain Beverage, a privately owned beer distributor located in Gypsum, CO, will sponsor this year’s beer garden, a new addition to the Eagle Get Out Expo. Food in the beer garden will be provided by the Dusty Boot. Patrons can enjoy $5 cups of beer as well as wine and cocktails for purchase (must be 21 or older). A portion of the proceeds from the beer garden will also benefit the Shaw Regional Cancer Center.
Live Music:
Good music is a part of every good party, and the Eagle Get Out Expo will not be an exception. Live music will be performed by Schwing Daddy on Saturday from 1:00-3:00; Olora Brothers on Saturday from 3:30-5:30 and more music on Sunday from 1:30-3:30.
Sports Safety:
The Eagle County Fire Department, in conjunction with the Vail Valley Medical Center’s Gypsum branch, will provide helmet testing and impact testing for cyclists and skateboarders alike at the 4th Eagle Get Out Expo.
